 What is Reiki

1. In western scientific terms

Reiki is a particular type of energy. Like all energy, Reiki is an energy frequency that occurs along the electromagnetic (EM) spectrum. The EM spectrum is the range of wavelengths that includes radio waves, microwaves, infrared waves, visible light, ultraviolet rays etc.

2. Where is it being used?

In mainstream health, some uses include pre and post-operations in hospitals, palliative care  and as part of massage treatment (click here & here). Predominantly, Reiki is associated with self & other care, introspection and spiritual practice. At present Reiki is viewed as a complementary therapy with rebates given by some private health funds.

3. Research into Reiki

Research into the field has just started. At present, there are only a few scientific studies that are of a high quality (click here for some of these). Currently, there are many more lay reports, referencing Reiki as beneficial for promoting self and other wellbeing. These reports occur internationally and cite positive observable outcomes. Further, there are so many reports of benefit that Reiki is being used in numerous hospitals and private palliative care facilities (http://www.reikiinhospitals.org/).

At present I am recruiting participants to increase scientific research into the health outcomes of Reiki. Interested? Click here.

4. What creates Reiki?

The human body creates bio-electrical signals and currents. The energy of Reiki is directed from the bioelectricity of the human body. From practice and study a Reiki practitioner can use this electricity to induce a better rhythm and flow for the client. Because the human body varies in energetic frequency a practitioner is able to attune to and apply Reiki.

5. How can the practitioners hands make someone feel better?

This is best understood by physics principal of induction. A few examples of induction include:

-Microwave energy inducing a change in the heat of food
-A struck tuning fork inducing the same vibration/harmony in another tuning fork that's close by
-Short wave frequency inducing an improvement in muscular functioning
-A certain frequency of sound (energy) inducing a glass to resonate to the point of breaking

These examples demonstrate that the EM energy resonated by one object affects another object. This same phenomena occurs during a Reiki session. By induction, the bioelectricity from person A induces health promoting outcomes in the bioelectricity of person B (list of benefits here).
